Founded in 1946, Shenzhen People's Hospital was formerly Bao’an County Health Center. It was renamed as Bao’an County People's Hospital after the founding of People’s Republic of China in 1949. Since it was the only hospital with inpatient care in Shenzhen back then, local Cantonese residents called it “Liuyibu” (meaning “inpatient care unit” in Cantonese). Since then, this colloquial term has long been the alternate of the hospital until today. It was again renamed as Shenzhen People’s Hospital after the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone in 1979. In 1994, the hospital was recognized as the first Grade 3A hospital in Shenzhen. In 1996, it was approved by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office to be the Second Hospital Affiliated to Jinan University. In 2005, it was endorsed further as the Second Clinical Medical College of Jinan University. In 2018, with the endorsement from the municipal government, the hospital became the First Hospital Affiliated to Southern University of Science and Technology. Shenzhen People’s Hospital is now the largest modern hospital in the city, with advanced equipment, outstanding staff, state-of-the-art scientific research, top education and medical training, and it provides people with comprehensive medical services.
